Part of the 3-lake tour, Lake Kammersee is by far the smallest lake and the only one on which a boat trip is not possible. During the day this tranquil place is shared with the guests who venture there by Plätte, in the evening it recedes back into the ownership of the wildlife of this natural oasis.
Looking up the length of the Kammersee you can see a waterfall falling from a steep rock face. This cascade is considered the origin of the Traun River and is especially powerful in the spring or after heavy rainfall. A visit to the Kammersee is a very special natural spectacle.
In the early days of salt production huge amounts of wood were required. Due to this demand the areas around Kammersee were logged and a sluiceway, a purpose cut river channel, was cut into the stone to help transport the timber from Kamersee to Toplitzsee. It took the miners of Aussee salt mine 2 years to complete and was in fulltime use for over 300 years commencing from 1549. This sluiceway is one of the oldest technical constructions of its type in Austria and can be observed when walking along the path up to Lake Kammersee.
